What is a WHOIS lookup?
A search for the public registration details of a domain, such as its registrar, registration and expiry dates, status and nameservers.
Can I find out who owns a domain?
Sometimes. Owner names and contact details are often hidden by privacy services, registry rules or data-protection laws. A hidden owner does not mean the domain is unregistered.
Why is some information hidden?
Privacy services, registry policies and laws such as GDPR redact personal details like names, emails and phone numbers. The registrar, status, dates and nameservers usually stay visible.
How can I check when a domain expires?
Run a lookup and check the Overview tab. It shows the registration, last update and expiration dates when the registry publishes them.
How do I find a domain's registrar?
Look up the domain and open the Registrar tab. You need to know the registrar to transfer a domain away from it. Transfer a domain
Can WHOIS tell me if a domain is available?
Not directly. A lookup of an unregistered name returns no record. To check whether a name is free to register, use domain search.
Does it work for every domain extension?
For every extension whose registry offers a public RDAP service, which includes all generic extensions such as .com. Some country extensions do not, and the tool says so.
